‘Ocean’s Eight’ Adds Anne Hathaway and Rihanna To Its Cast

By August 10, 2016

In terms of the gender-swapped sequels, reboots, and remakes that are coming out of Hollywood right now, the one that has grabbed my attention as being the most promising is Ocean’s Eight, the new film from director Gary Ross which will continue the Ocean’s franchise, this time following a heist orchestrated by Danny Ocean’s sister (played by Sandra Bullock), and her all-female crew.

Set to feature a crew of eight, all-female members, the cast for the movie has been shaping up incredibly well over the last few months with actresses like Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling, and more all rumored to be attached for the film. It looks like we finally know seven of its members now, at least.

Deadline is reporting that Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, and Awkwafina  (the stage name of Nora Lum, a rapper and comedian most recently seen in Neighbors 2) have all been added to the film’s cast, while also confirming that Blanchett, Bonham Carter, Bullock, and Kaling will be starring in the film as well. The eighth and final member is still reportedly uncast, though with production set to begin in October, I imagine we’ll find out the identity of the last crew member sometime sooner, rather than later.

The film’s key heist will reportedly center around the New York Met Gala as well, though no other plot details are known as of yet. Ocean’s Eleven Trilogy director Steven Soderbergh is on hands as a producer on the continuation as well, with George Clooney involved also.

Described previously as having a similar tone as that of Soderbergh’s trilogy, I can’t imagine a much better lineup of female actresses to take over for the previous crew than this one. Though, the inclusion of Rihanna does seem interesting, especially after she was announced to be playing Marion Crane in the upcoming final season of Bates Motel, making this a second large acting gig she’s landed in a relatively short time span. For what it’s worth, at least she’ll be surrounded by an all-star cast here, some of whom are generally considered some of the best actresses of their respective generations.

Ocean’s Eight does not currently have a release date.
