It was announced just a few months ago that critically-acclaimed writer and director Christopher Nolan’s next film would be a WWII period action drama, Dunkirk, with Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, and Kenneth Branagh already cast in the film. Now, as the production’s start date grows near, it looks like Nolan’s latest cinematic endeavor has just made an unusual casting decision. To say the least.

Deadline is reporting that One Direction member, Harry Styles, has reportedly been cast in the film with Dunkirk marking the musician’s feature film debut. In addition to that, TheWrap has also revealed that the relatively unknown British actor, Fionn Whitehead has been cast as the film’s lead as well.

The film will be set in France during the second world war, and will tell the true story of the Miracle of Dunkirk/Operation Dynamo, an evacuation orchestrated by British Admiral Bertram Ramsey, which saved the lives of over 200,000 allied troops trapped in Dunkirk by the Nazis. Nolan has co-written the script with his brother and frequent collaborator, Jonathan Nolan, and will be shot with a combination of IMAX 65mm film cameras and 65mm large format film.

Now, listen, this certainly isn’t the first time that a musician has transitioned over onto the big screen, and if Nolan is willing to cast him in his next film, then Styles must have the chops needed to hold his own against this impressive cast. The only real concern I have with this is if Styles’ presence will at all take viewers out of the film, since he’s such a recognizable face and name in pop culture right now.

Whether or not that happens though, I guess we’ll have to wait and see. As of right now, Dunkirk sounds spectacular and after Interstellar divided a number of his fans, it will be interesting to see Nolan take on such a bombastic and cinematic period piece. After the visuals he’s already shown us in his previous films, I can only imagine what a war ragged 1940s France might look like with him behind the camera.

Dunkirk has been set for a release on July 21st, 2017.
