Alex Garland made waves last year with his directorial debut, Ex Machina, which some have not only proclaimed to be one of the best films of 2015, but one of the best sci-fi films ever made. Once you see it too, it’s hard to debate otherwise.
A large portion of that goes to Garland’s pitch-perfect direction and writing, but a big reason for its effectiveness was the performances given by the film’s three main leads in Domhnall Gleeson, Alicia Vikander, and Oscar Isaac, with the latter reportedly set to collaborate with Garland on his newest project as well.
Thanks to a report from The Tracking Board, Isaac will apparently be reteaming with Garland for Annihilation, a futuristic gothic horror adaptation of the first installment in Jeff VanderMeer’s “Southern Reach” trilogy. He joins the already cast Natalie Portman (Black Swan), Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin), and Tessa Thompson (Creed) in the film.
The novel follows a team of four (made up of a biologist, an anthropologist, a psychologist, and a surveyor) sent into a place known only as Area X, which is abandoned and cut off from all other civilization. The team marks the twelfth expedition into the area, with the previous expeditions being plagued by disappearances, suicides, aggressive cancers, and heavy mental trauma.
Considering how well Garland was able to balance the sometimes horrifying elements of Ex Machina with the sci-fi genre and character work, this sounds like something he could really hit a homerun with. Having a lead cast of these three, strong and talented actresses and now Isaac as well, Garland’s done a good job at filling the film with as much talent as possible in front of the camera.
Part of the reason Ex Machina ended up being the hit it was though, was the fact that everyone went into it not knowing what to expect, which allowed them to be fully blown away by it. Now, with Garland having to manage a whole lot higher expectations with Annihilation, it’ll be interesting to see just how well he’s able to follow up what many believe is a sci-fi masterpiece.
Annihilation is currently in development.
