The Star Trek Beyond news just keeps coming! After dropping a fantastic new trailer and confirming that the film would host its world premiere at San Diego Comic-Con – complete with live musical accompaniment – Paramount has released some new character-specific posters for the upcoming film, featuring Karl Urban’s cantankerous doctor, Leonard “Bones” McCoy, and Sofia Boutella’s alien ally Jaylah.
As far as posters go, these are pretty standard fare, but I do like how the right side of each image dissolves into the massive alien fleet that destroys the Enterprise in the latest trailer. This unknown foe looks to be something unlike anything Kirk (Chris Pine) and his crew have faced yet, and their inclusion in these images definitely positions them as a major force to contend with.
While I loved the Star Trek reboot, I wasn’t the biggest fan of Star Trek Into Darkness – I think the marketing team’s insistence on hiding the identity of Benedict Cumberbatch’s character by giving him a fake name was a huge narrative misstep, and the final “reveal” came with no impact because everyone already knew who the hell he was to begin with. And when the first trailer for Star Trek Beyond was released last year, I’ll admit to being more than a little apprehensive – I feared that director Justin Lin might be bringing a bit too much of the style he’s been honing on the Fast and Furious franchise for the past few years.
But the latest clip put many of those fears to rest – as Alex said, it’s a vast improvement – and the incredibly positive buzz coming out from last week’s fan event once again has me hyped to boldly go… well, you know.
Also featuring returning cast members Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin and John Cho, Star Trek Beyond will premiere on Wednesday, July 20, in a special open-air IMAX screening for attendees at San Diego Comic-Con. The film hits theaters on July 22.
