I haven’t seen Jeremy Saulnier’s Blue Ruin yet, but everything I’ve read about it indicates it’s a grim, intense thriller that’s definitely worth watching. I really need to carve out some time to check it out – especially since it’s available on Netflix Instant right now. Saulnier’s debut film had mostly unknown actors in it, but thanks to the success of Blue Ruin, he’s managed to score some big names to appear in his second film, Green Room. According to a press release, the biggest of those names is none other than “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and X-Men star Patrick Stewart.
In the crime thriller GREEN ROOM, a young punk rock band find themselves trapped in a secluded venue after stumbling upon a horrific act of violence, fighting for their lives against a gang of white power skinheads intent on eliminating all witnesses.
Stewart will play Darcy Banker, “the unflinching and industrial leader of a ferocious white supremacist fiefdom based in the Pacific Northwest.” He’ll be joined by Anton Yelchin (Star Trek), Imogen Poots (Need For Speed), Alia Shawkat (“Arrested Development”), Mark Webber (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World), lesser known actors like Joe Cole, Callum Turner, Kai Lennox, and Eric Edelstein, and Saulnier’s Blue Ruin star Macon Blair. Filming started earlier this month in Portland, Oregon.
Stewart is coming off of X-Men: Days of Future Past, which may be his last X-Men movie since X-Men: Apocalypse is set to feature mostly the younger actors from First Class and pick up in the 1980s, eschewing the time travel mechanics seen in DOFP. Green Room (Saulnier has a thing for colors in his titles, doesn’t he?) will mark a return to the kind of the villainous roles Stewart played in the 90s in films like Masterminds and Conspiracy Theory – but with this director at the helm, I’m guessing this will be considerably more bleak.
