Pearl Mackie is the New ‘Doctor Who’ Companion

By April 23, 2016

The Doctor won’t be returning to our TV screens until next year, but at least now we know that when he does come back, he won’t be alone. It was announced today live on the BBC that Pearl Mackie has been cast as Bill, The Doctor’s newest companion. A short trailer aired, which gave us our first look at Bill and The Doctor as they run for their lives.

I like her already. “Wouldn’t it be quicker to just say ‘kill’?”

We’ve known the part was cast for a little over a month now (see?), but didn’t have any idea who would be stepping into the Tardis as Jenna Coleman’s replacement. Mackie is a relative unknown in Britain, but Capaldi seems quite pleased with the selection (c/o BBCNews)

It is a genuine delight to welcome Pearl Mackie to Doctor Who. A fine, fine actress with a wonderful zest and charm, she’s a refreshing addition to the Tardis and will bring a universe of exciting new possibilities to The Doctor’s adventures.

Mackie describes Bill as “wicked” and “cool, strong, sharp, a little bit vulnerable with a bit of geekiness thrown in”. From this brief trailer, it’s clear she and Capaldi have great chemistry together, something that was at times lacking in his relationship with Coleman. Welcome to the Tardis, Pearl.

Doctor Who returns in 2017 for it’s final series with Steven Moffat as showrunner.
