‘Pitch Perfect 3′ Gets a Release Date and Two Returning Main Actresses

By June 16, 2015

After it was learned that Universal was ready to follow-up Pitch Perfect 2 with another sequel in hopes of finding similar success, news has now broken that a third film will be coming, and that it will also feature the series’ most important faces.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal Pictures has officially slotted Pitch Perfect 3 with a release date of July 21st, 2017. Brownstone Productions’ Max Handelman and Elizabeth Banks — the actress and director of this year’s second film — are returning to produce the second sequel to the 2012 original. Screenwriter Kay Cannon, who previously penned the first two films in the series, is also in negotiations to return to scripting duties for the third film. Perhaps most importantly, though, series stars Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson will now definitely return for a third round of the surprise franchise.

Both prior films in the series have seen steady and surprising financial success at the box office. Made for between only $17-29 million, both films have managed to exceed expectations and gross hundreds of millions of dollars in theaters. Both films are also critically acclaimed as well, making the decision to move ahead with another installment a pretty simple one for Universal. The stories of the films revolve around a college a cappella group that first attempts to win national recognition, while the second film revolves around their attempt to regain glory by winning a worldwide competition.

Pitch Perfect 2 opened in May, and became the box office champion during its opening weekend, beating out Warner Bros.’ Mad Max: Fury Road. It’s grossed over $260 million at the box office thus far, and received generally positive reviews from critics. As long as the series can maintain a level of quality that’s expected, it will likely be a solid bet for Universal. For more on the film as it takes further shape, keep a tab open to GeekNation.
