‘Pitch Perfect 3’ is Officially Being Developed

Although only a moderate performer at the box office, the high level of rentals and home media sales spurred Universal Pictures to make this year’s Pitch Perfect 2. Successfully gauging audience interest, Universal enjoyed success with the sequel in theaters, and are now ready to bring the franchise back for a third turn.

According to Variety, Universal has officially started to move forward on developing Pitch Pefect 3, and have entered into preliminary negotiations with series screenwriter Kay Cannon to write the screenplay for the third effort. The original Pitch Perfect, which was released in 2012, grossed a solid $115 million worldwide on a budget of only $17 million, and the sequel performed amazingly well, having grossed over $250 million on a budget of $29 million.

While the third film is moving ahead at the studio, there are a number of questions that are still up in the air. Since the first film wasn’t perceived, at least initially, to be franchise material, none of the major stars were signed to multi-picture deals. Because of that, the studio will have to renegotiate for series stars Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, and others to bring them back for a third film. There’s also the lingering question of who will direct, since original film director Jason Moore and sequel director Elizabeth Banks are similarly not locked into the creation of a second sequel.

Rumor has it that Moore is being considered by Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios as a potential director for the 2017 Spider-Man film, while Banks’ schedule seems relatively clear since no projects featuring her — outside of Magic Mike XXLThe Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, and “Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp” — have been announced for her. That’s not to say she’s not busy with as-yet unannounced projects, though.

No release window was given, but keep an eye on GeekNation for any new developments on Pitch Perfect 3 as they happen!
