Rachel, Clare and Brendan discuss the Season 5 Episode 8 “Hardhome.”

  • Clare Kramer

Enjoy the podcast everyone. This was IMO an amazing episode, with many plot points and scenes to discuss – not to mention great dialogue and character development as well. Leave your comments and thoughts below – we read them. Can’t believe there’s only two episodes left! Enjoy.

    • David Johnson

Yea its Podcast Monday, but I might have to start hanging with Sad Wookie in 3 weeks!!!!

    • Liz K Clark

Awesome episode, awesome podcast epi too. You guys are the best GoT out there for me because you break it all down. Now time to google the stages of confession or whatever Brenden was saying…. stand by.

  • David Johnson

Karsi the Wilding Hottie I thought Jon Snow was going to get His Wilding On Again (Poor Jon Still Knows Nothing!). But the scene with the white walker children was BLOOD Chilling!!!.Also thought Her putting Her Children on the boats was almost a Titanic sinking scene!!!

    • She was such a fantastic character! I really hated to see her go.

      • David Johnson

Look up Birgitte Sorensen online she’s throwing a few hints.

        • NO?! Don’t tell me that she may be coming back?

          • David Johnson

I’m figuring She becomes a Horse Riding Bad Ass White Walker.

  • David Johnson

Arya’s test, can She kill someone who hasn’t wronged Her! I thought the Vanilla was the water from the House of Black & White the whole time.

  • David Johnson

Is the Waif girl in the House of Black & White Actually Blind?

    • Clare Kramer

Her character was, but it’s not being played that way on the show… so…. would have to say no based on her screen-time.

      • David Johnson

Thought Brendan or maybe it was Rachel say She was blind. Think they threw lots of things out of the book long ago! So will there be Guests on while Your filming “Strange Ones”??

        • Liz K Clark

Rachel said she was blind this episdoe but they clearly threw that out long ago…

          • David Johnson

Good was going to rewatch to make sure, thought maybe it was part of Her lie training!!!

  • David Johnson

I take it that Jaqen is the Shaolin Master of the House of Black & White does this make Arya his Grasshopper?

  • David Johnson

George JJ Martin is writing Prequel Books which could be the spinoff for GoT!

  • Dale Baines

That battle was just beyond awesome! So completely unexpected too! I would’ve been happy if they ended the episode with Tormund bludgeoning the Lord of Bones to death–as macabre as it was, I was chortling like crazy–so I was completely taken by surprised when the episode continued…and continued…and then BOOM that battle. Fucking amazing. I cannot WAIT to see it on IMAX.

And I can watch Dany and Tyrion talk for HOURS. I cannot wait for the day when they become aware of all the shit that is going down up North. It makes it a bit difficult to care about what’s going on with Arya though. I know she’s on her personal journey, and I like her character fine, but at this point, I’m just not sure where she fits in in the grander scheme of things. How will becoming a Faceless assassin help fight the Whitewalker army? Jon Snow has a purpose, Bran has a purpose, and even Sansa, because she’s up North, might serve a purpose as well. But Arya’s story is kinda just isolated. Not to mention, Jacquen’s (sp) third person oracle speak is really getting on my nerves.

    • David Johnson

North of the Wall Negotiation are determined Very Fast! The White Walker Lemming made the episode for Me, until the Children of the Corn Whiter Walkers!!!

      • Negotiations are fast because no lawyers are involved! Haha

        • David Johnson

I think the club is considered either a lawyer or a judge!!!

          • Lawyer, judge, jury and lethal injection by wood.

    • Could not agree with you more… The battle at the end was just a GIANT cherry on what was already an awesome cake.

And yes, the meeting of the minds between Tyrion and Dany are just too perfect… Two individuals rising from the ashes of abuse and torn families to make of the powerhouse. Wow, what an episode!

    • Liz K Clark

Actually you’re right Dale, Brenden did make that point and now it does make sense. Everyone on the A stunt team was away filming E8’s epic battle, and the sand snakes suffered. Makes total sense. That’s why it’s so difficult to judge an episodic show on an episode alone. I believe you have to really watch the entire season to cast an objective opinion….

    • Brendan Cowles

A man thinks you make a great point about the Arya story line (yes Jaqen is bugging me too). It is so personal to her and her own vengeance that at this point it’s really hard to see how it can or will dove tail into the bigger picture. Seems like every other story has macro implications except Arya’s. But I’m sure I’m just not seeing it now….

      • Dale Baines

The problem with her vengeance is that most of the people she wants dead is already dead. There’s only one guy left, right? And it’s like, who cares. It’s easy enough to kill that one person. I do have faith that they will find a way to eventually bring her into the bigger fold, but until that happens, I just don’t know if I care to be on her journey anymore. I’m very close to just forwarding through her scenes, and it pains me to even say that.

        • David Johnson

If she gets the person shifting ability She would be a lot of help to either Jon, Sansa, or Her 2 Little Wandering Brothers. Still don’t think Her Story Thread will go beyond a Transformation as a cliff hanger in the last episode this season.

  • Dale Baines

Btw, Brendan, I also thought the Thin Man said “vinegar”, and was laughing at how overly generous Arya was being since she practically flooded the oyster, but now that you guys pointed out it was vanilla, I too, want to vomit. WTF. Who eats oysters with VANILLA?? Ugh, I think I’m gonna be sick again.

    • Liz K Clark

So gross! But they definitely said Vanilla. Interesteing point it may be the water from the house of b/w mixed in w/ the Vanilla….

    • Brendan Cowles

As Daniel pointed out… it was “vinegar” … I checked. It just sounds like vanilla when he says it with the cockney accent. Thank god that even a thousand years ago in a parallel universe no one is putting vanilla on oysters!!!

  • David Johnson

The Sparrows indoctrination is just like most Cults brainwashing except they have dungeons!!!

  • David Johnson

Keep thinking Ollie was poisoning Sam with the food!!!

    • Clare Kramer

Good thought – especially since food/nourishment was an underlaying theme in the episode. Cersi not drinking, Tommen not eating, camps running out of food, etc. One thing is for sure: something is going on w/ the Ollie character to be continually featured the way he has been….

      • David Johnson

Haven’t liked him since He killed Ygritte (Brendan was right She Was Hot [not a funeral pyre pun]), plus Hes always whining the Wildings killed My parents , the Wildings killed everyone in My village. Some people just don’t know how to move on!

  • David Johnson

The Women who plays Karsi Brigitte Sorensen has hinted online She’s Not Gone!!! Could She Become on of the White Walker Leaders who look like they had been Leaders or Knights in their past life.

    • Liz K Clark

No way I love her. I was quickly interested/vested in her character, so to see her die quickly… well, can’t say I didn’t expect it as it is George RR….. I would be thrilled if she’s back, but it will be “reanimated” so won’t be the same character anyway. I do love the actress though.

      • David Johnson

Thinking they’ll use Her as the White Walker Story continues. Probably be more likely next season though, there going to be a Big Part of next season. Really thought they were bringing Her on as Jon’s new love interest.

  • David Johnson

I don’t think White Walkers can travel any farther than where its Winter. Warm Weather Oh & probably Dragons probably keep them in line!

  • David Johnson

Yeaaaaa True Detective Podcasts, Great I don’t have to drink with Sad Wookie on Mondays!!!!! Plus isn’t there a 1 week gap between the shows end & beginning for a Season 5 Breakdown with Crystal Ball Prediction of Season 6????

    • Brendan Cowles

I’m officially dying to drink with Sad Wookie! Even on Monday!

      • David Johnson

        I’m bringing him to SDCC.

  • David Johnson

May have to relisten don’t believe anyone called Tommen A LITTLE PUNK during the Cersi section!

    • Brendan Cowles

      But we should have!!!

  • Tosha Cook Ncics

@GeekNation:disqus ,@clarekramer:disqus, @brendancowles Ok, first off I was screaming at my kindle RUN JON RUN to the point that I lost my voice. Second I think my neighbors are going to have me kicked out due to the fact that once I seen that disturbance in the background at the wildling home I knew it was the white walkers and I started yelling oh shit, oh shit, oh shit stomping my feet…..LOL. I’m not a zombie fan, hell I can’t listen to MJ’s Thriller without having a nightmare those little white walkers (forgot their name) were creepy as hell and I was so happy you all explain about Jon sword b/c I forgot that it was made of that steel so glad someone remembered cause I was like hell yea when Jon killed one of the white walker knights. I loved the banter back and forth btw Dany and Ty. I can’t wait for more. This is the 3rd time GoT has made me lose my voice. Spoiler Alert… 1st Ned (screamed then almost cried), 2nd RW (screamed and cried thank goodness no one was there recording me), 3rd last nights battle (screamed and cussed). I’m sad that there is only two left and is it just me or shouldn’t there have been a break by now? Normally there is a break before the last two eps. so everyone can catch up or I’m I missing something. Anywhooo great ep last night and @RachelTrue is right Winter is HERE!!!!

    • David Johnson

Those Little White Walkers Were EXTRA Creepy. What ever You do never read “The Girl With All The Gifts” or see the Movie when @MccarthyColm releases it!!!

      • Liz K Clark

Tosha I completely agree – I was yelling at the screen. It was undoubtly one of the best episodes of TV ever posted. The Jorah stuff was very powerful, and actually I was talking out loud back to the computer during the podcast. This battle was told off page in the books, so I’m not sure what I was expecting, but what was delivered far exceeded my expectations in terms of production value and execution. I think these guys are going to do an extra episode so 3 GoTs and then I believe they will carry on into True Detective??? Am I right? Did I hear Clare say that?

        • David Johnson

Brendan sort of promised a GoT Wrapup show or SHOWS?? on his Twitter Feed last night.

  • Daniel Callahan

Loving the podcast, but I have to let my inner Stannis out for a couple of corrections.
    1) Kevan is Kevan Lannister, Tywin’s bother. You seem to be confusing him somewhat with Mace Tyrell.
    2) The last time winter came was about 10 years ago. It was a short and mild one. The fear is that after such a long summer, this will be a similarly long winter. There was a generationally long winter, called the Long Night, thousands of years ago.
    3) The insurance agent asks for vinegar. Try close captions when you are confused. Or just consider the horror of vanilla on oysters.
    4) Jorah has not been protecting Dany since she was a baby. He only met her at the wedding to Khal Drogo. Arguably Varys could have been the one looking out for her all this time, but what his motives were i doing so remains unclear.
    5) This is more idle speculation than a correction, but Cersei’s “Counsellor” was the fallen maester Qyburn. His lines “there is another way out” and “the work continues,” leads me to suspect he is suggesting Cersei demand a trial by combat with his Mountain/Frankenstein’s monster creation as her champion.

    • Wow, love #5. That’s some serious speculation but it’s a good one!

    • Brendan Cowles

Vanilla on oysters… oh the horra. It was vinegar, just the cockney delivery made it sound like, well, the horra. I don’t remember anyone mentioning Jorah as Dany’s protector… I brought up that Tyrion speculated that Varys, though tasked as the spy master with finding and killing Dany all those years, was also responsible for the fact that she was never where the assassins were. And… bump for #5 being a really intriguing possibility…

    • Brendan Cowles

Okay #5 is genius and I’m seconding right now for the record. Truly pissed I didn’t think of it cuz it’s so good. What better purpose to reanimate the Mountain? I just re-watched that scene and his “the work continues” delivery is awesome and lines up perfectly with this hypothesis… please be it… please please please

  • nicole

Love the podcast but one thing that drives me nuts…it’s Lena “HEADEY”….there is no second “L” in her name so please stop calling her “Headley”. That is all 🙂

    • Duly noted. If that’s it, then we’re doing okay.

      Thanks for listening!

  • JJ Arson

Wow, I’ve been looking for new GoT podcasts to listen to, and after listening to this in it’s entirety, yours has to be the worst. I’m not looking for expert level book knowledge but at least get a firm grasp on what has happened in previous seasons. You guys sound like you have no idea what you’re talking about.

    • Are you just trolling or do you have a point to make? If you have a point then try spreading your vast knowledge here so it can be discussed.

Pulling out a random name from many, on the spot, while being recording is not the easiest of tasks.

    • David Johnson

Well then don’t listen to it.

    • Brendan Cowles

Thanks for listening JJ, seriously. This is a pure fan podcast. Zero expertise (at least on my part), just pure fun banter and speculation. Too many other “expert” podcasts out there to compete with. And just speaking for myself… I don’t have a firm grasp on what happened in my life yesterday so please don’t expect me to have one on the GOT show history…. I mean I think I had Lucky Charms for breakfast but now I’m starting to question that. Was it a dream? Or maybe my son wanted me to think I had Lucky Charms but in reality it was the Trader Joe’s knock offs but he kept referring to them as Lucky Charms with the sneaky intention of programming my mind so that the next time I go shopping I instinctively reach for the real thing and don’t realize it…. anyway… huh!? ***fist out – fingers open – mic drop thing***

      • David Johnson

Name Pronunciation & not remembering ever Twist & Plot Turn considering they don’t go by the book. Think You 3 do a Great job & the few people that log in afterwards general fill in the blanks & correct any major gaffes.

        • Thanks for that, David, I know they will appreciate the kind words.

Also, the JJ guy above signed up and has made a total of ONE comment [ever]. Experience will tell you that he’s most likely from another GoT podcast.

          • David Johnson

Never have figured out people on the net that have to whine . If you don’t like something move along there are probably 1,000 more sites doing it. At least say something constructive to validate your point.
, but your probably right he has a podcast or blog that only his Mom listens too!!!

    • Frankie X

hmm. would have to disagree with ya there JJ, I’ve listened to (too many to list) podcasts, and these guys/gals are my favs! Remember, it’s not just the SIZE of your knowledge that counts, but it’s what you do with it… 😉 it’s called GeekNation, not uptight just-the-facts-ma’am-nation. xo

      • Hahaha, no doubt… If it were we would have been forced to change the name a long time ago. Thanks, Frankie!

  • Frankie X

This episode redeemed this season for me!
I was starting to get nervous we had jumped the shark (or, jumped the Sand Snake?)
From the crackling dialogue between Tyrion & Dany, the breathe of air for Arya’s scenes (literally & figuratively ) and of course the stellar battle scene in Harhome… yay!! I could blather on, but I think everyone’s covered the awesome bits…
    ps- great podcast!
    thnx
    Fr

    • David Johnson

Only thing that sucks is only 2 episodes & 3 podcast left, then a years wait!!!!

    • Could not have been a better episode… Fitting for a season finale!
