The marketing strategy for Lionsgate’s upcoming reboot of the Power Rangers franchise has been a very puzzling experiment. Sure, we’ve seen the usual teaser posters and production stills, but for a major tentpole release that’s scheduled to hit theaters in just a few months, footage from Power Rangers has been conspicuous by its absence.
Oddly enough, the cast was making appearances at various events during San Diego Comic-Con, but Lionsgate did not host a panel for the film, nor was any footage released. One would think that Comic-Con would be the best place to introduce the new Power Rangers to the world, with an audience that would practically be predisposed to an enthusiastic response. Now we’re in the midst of New York Comic Con, and the first teaser trailer has finally been revealed – but if you’re looking to see the Rangers suit up and kick some ass, you might be disappointed.
It almost feels like director Dean Israelite is trying to pay homage to John Hughes in this clip, because there’s a very distinct Breakfast Club vibe going on here. It seems the teenage heroes from Angel Grove meet during Saturday detention, and even some of their personalities feel like they’ve been pulled directly from the 80s classic. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, and the film seems to be far more grounded than I would have anticipated, but the resemblance feels like a very distinct choice.
I also find myself legitimately surprised that we don’t get any footage of the suits – there’s a little bit of a tease near the end of the trailer which shows the suits “assembling” for lack of a better word, but the decision to hold back on the full reveal seems like a curious one, especially when we’ve already seen production photos of costumes. But the trailer does give us a brief glimpse into the powers bestowed upon our young heroes, and we also get a quick shot of a scenery-chewing Elizabeth Banks as the film’s primary villain, Rita Repulsa.
Starring Dacre Montgomery, RJ Cyler, Naomi Scott, Becky G and Ludi Lin as the Rangers, along with Bryan Cranston as Zordon and Bill Hader as the voice of Alpha 5, Power Rangers is slated to hit theaters on March 24, 2017.
