There has been a lot of mystery surrounding Rachel McAdams’ role in Marvel’s 2016 Doctor Strange film. So far, we know that Chiwetel Ejiofor will be playing Baron Mordo, Tilda Swinton will be The Ancient One, Benedict Cumberbatch will be playing the Sorcerer Supreme himself – Stephen Strange, and Mads Mikkelsen has been rumored for a mystery villain role as well.
While many fans have speculated that McAdams could be playing a live-action version of Clea in the film, a long-time love interest of Strange’s in the comics from the Dark Dimension that has strong ties to some of Strange’s more iconic villains, there also hasn’t been much word regarding the role the Dark Dimension could play in the film – making the possibility of Clea appearing even more mysterious.
Latino-Review is reporting that McAdams will actually be playing Christine Palmer in the film though, one of the night shift nurses from Marvel’s “Night Nurse” comic. There isn’t any news on how Palmer could factor into the actual story of Doctor Strange, but considering the character’s background as a surgical assistant, it is possible that she could play a role in Strange’s life as a Neurosurgeon before the accident that led to him becoming the Sorcerer Supreme.
A large majority of rumors hinted towards Rosario Dawson’s character being Linda Carter in Marvel and Netflix’s Daredevil leading up the show’s debut though, who is the most iconic and first Night Nurse in the Marvel Comics, before it was revealed that she would instead be playing Claire Temple. Showrunner Steven S. DeKnight revealed earlier this year that Marvel Studios actually stopped the show’s creative team from referencing Carter in any way in the series because they had possible plans for the character in a future movie.
So while nothing is officially confirmed, this rumor would make sense taking DeKnight’s comments into account, and how much Strange’s life as a surgeon affects who he is as a person both before and after his mystical training. If so, this would hopefully give McAdams more to do in the film than some of the previous female MCU love-interests, and considering how bad-ass Claire Temple ended up being in Daredevil, it’s possible that Christine Palmer could make a fairly large splash in the film, if this rumor ends up coming true.
Doctor Strange is set to hit theatres on November 4th, 2016.
