Remember Ray Stevenson?
He played the Punisher in War Zone a few years ago and is to this day some fans favorite take on the character. Much like Thomas Jane in The Punisher; the issues with the film were obvious and vast but none of them were necessarily his fault, including the fact that they barely gave him any speaking lines at all; he just blew stuff up and stood there looking cool.
Recently in an interview with Cinemablend, Stevenson gave his thoughts on Netflix bringing the character back with Jon Bernthal:
I’m delighted that the character is still vivid and valid. Punisher is from the Max series of Marvel comics which is technically an R-rated, I mean it’s a very violent man doing very violent things to very violent people. How he will translate to the audience, I wish all of them the very best. But, when I look at Garth Ennis’ writing, I found it to be some of the most sophisticated and intelligent writing I’ve ever come across.
This issue has perplexed fans for ages. How is it that they can make crazy, fantasical stuff like Spider-Man work and seem realistic but nobody can seem to make The Punisher movie work? It’s such a simple concept that could be taken so many great places. War Zone proved you need more than just a hard R rating, but that did feel like it was a necessity. Luckily, Netflix can pretty much do what they want.
Stevenson went on to hint that he hasn’t given up on playing the character again himself if ever given the chance:
And when I did the movie, I think the only thing it suffered from was that our references were from comic books that were already 10-15 years old and I would love nothing more than to continue and bring Frank back…but bring Frank back to the big screen.
Interesting to hear the thoughts from one of the men who played the Punisher himself. Netflix doesn’t seem to miss a lot; maybe this will finally be a story that will live up to the character. What do you think, GeekNation? Stay tuned for more updates as always!
