‘Ready Player One’ Eyeing Ben Mendelsohn For Key Role

By January 6, 2016

Over the past few years, Ben Mendelsohn has emerged as one of the best actors of our generation, with key supporting and sometimes leading roles in films like The Dark Knight Rises, The Place Beyond the Pines, Starred Up, Animal Kingdom, Slow West, and Lost River. The actor has been the talk of the town over the past year though (deservedly so) for his breakout, award-worthy work in Netflix’s original series, Bloodline, in which he played the enigmatic black sheep brother in the show’s central family.

Right now, the actor is set to star in Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and while the details of his role are still being kept under wraps, he has been heavily rumored to be one of the film’s main villains. Now, it looks like he’s on the verge of landing a key role in one of the most anticipated book adaptations of recent memory as well.

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Mendelsohn is currently in talks to play the main villain in Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One, after the casting of Olivia Cooke as the film’s female lead just a few months ago. Spielberg is reportedly still in the midst of testing actors for the film’s male lead as well.

The movie will be an adaptation of a novel of the same name by Ernest Cline, which combined pop culture references and an intriguing sci-fi story to make it one of the most entertaining additions to the genre of the past few years. Set in a virtual world called Oasis, the story follows a teenager who finds himself competing in a treasure hunt against other sometimes ruthless competitors after the game’s founder dies and offers his fortune as a grand prize.

Mendelsohn has also been rumored as the main villain in Guillermo del Toro’s Justice League Dark as well recently, making him one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood right now. After years of turning in some of the best performances of their respective years too, it’s about damn time. Despite the differences between the book and film adaptation too, Ready Player One already has some amazing promise going behind it with the talent involved, and landing Mendelsohn in such a key role could just be an even bigger step in the right direction.

Ready Player One is set to hit theatres on December 15th, 2017.
