Fans of “Star Trek: Voyager,” the last series in the franchise to run for seven seasons and having concluded in 2001, is notable for a few different reasons. The most obvious difference it has to the other shows is its female captain, Kathryn Janeway, played by Kate Mulgrew. People who watched “Voyager” for all seven seasons likely know all there is to know about Captain Janeway: her epic encounters with the Borg, her staring death in the face against the Krenim during the “Year of Hell,” along with her absolute love of coffee. One fan chose to pay tribute to that last trait of the heroic captain, but with a twist: she actually did it in space.
Italian astronaut Sam Cristoforetti is currently aboard the International Space Station in orbit around Earth, serving as the first Italian woman in space on a long duration mission aboard the station. She’s also a Star Trek fan, and knows enough about Janeway to pay tribute to one of her most well-known quotes.
On “Star Trek: Voyager’s” sixth episode in its first season, “The Cloud,” the crew is still acclimating to being cut off from the rest of the galaxy due to the events of the pilot episode, “Caretaker.” With energy reserves running low and her supply of genuine coffee exhausted, Janeway is dismayed about the prospect of being unable to have her satisfying morning cup. Then, the ship comes across a nebula in space that exhibits some unique properties. See the clip below:
Although not cut off from the rest of the galaxy, regular supply shipments to the ISS need to be made, and apparently coffee is one of those necessary elements that need to be restocked from time to time. To mark the occasion, Cristoforetti suited up in her “Voyager” uniform — with an ISS pin replacing the regular combadge — and pointed to the module launched by Space X that is shipping some new supplies to the station’s crew.

It’s pretty awesome seeing Star Trek being actively represented in real space, and hopefully, Sam Cristoforetti and her compatriots are enjoying a nice cup of coffee as we speak.
