Robert Downey Jr. Discusses Future of ‘Iron Man 4’

By September 8, 2014

The question that’s been on most Marvel fans’ minds for a long while (OTHER than “When will there be a Marvel film lead by one of their female superheroes?”) is “Will there be an Iron Man 4?”

During a recent interview with Variety while promoting his new film, The Judge, the question was once again posed to Robert Downey Jr. about the future of said franchise entry – and as much as I’d like to say I have good news, I can’t.

Well, okay –  it’s half and half.

While RDJ HAS signed on with Marvel and Disney for two Avengers sequels (including Age of Ultron, which opens next summer), there are no plans for IM4 at this very moment. “There isn’t one in the pipe. No, there’s no plan for a fourth Iron Man,” he said, and when a follow-up question about if he would “allow” anyone else to play the role, he jokingly added, “I like that the idea is that it would be up to me, like I’m casting director for Marvel.”

But just like consigliere Tom Hagen advised both Vito and Michael Corleone in The Godfather films, The Judge co-star Robert Duvall said, “Don’t give it to anybody else.”

I love it when film legends still have a sense of humor…but I digress.

Downey’s statement, of course, backs up a GeekNation scoop from last year when Gwenyth Paltrow revealed that there wouldn’t be an Iron Man 4, though he did leave the door open for a possible sequel right before Comic-Con this year. As usual, we’ll have to wait and see how this shakes out, but if Marvel really doesn’t have any plans for a fourth Iron Man movie, they’re likely going to be introducing some new characters to fill the slots on the development slate they just released.

I’m pretty satisfied with how Iron Man 3 ended and would be okay if that was the last in the series. More importantly, how do YOU feel about the prospect of no IM4?

  • While I have not been following everything ‘Iron Man’, if the 3 ended well, then it’s okay if there’s no four. However, If you’re an Iron Man ‘Die Hard’, you may think otherwise 🙂 I hate it most when episodes or seasons/TV series end without a satisfactory ending. Kinda leaves a bad taste in the mouth…

I am torn. I liked IM3, but I would be more than happy to have another Iron Man movie.

If they want to “retcon” the Mandarin, go for 4. If not, leave it alone. Let Avengers 2 and 3 play out. By then they’ll need to start re-casting most of these guys anyway. DO NOT REBOOT just because of a change in actors, though. ’nuff said.

Just like in the comics, the characters shouldn’t really age. Do like Bond and recast and move on.
