Robert Downey Jr. May Want Mel Gibson For ‘Avengers’ Sequel

By January 3, 2014

Another Marvel movie rumor is making the rounds. This time it involves Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr. According to a source who spoke anonymously to, Downey has been using his considerable pull to get both Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster cast in a future Marvel movie, “preferably in one of the ‘Avengers’ films.”

The source goes on to say:

“He wants to bring Mel and Jodie into the Marvel universe. It’s been a longtime dream of Robert’s to help Mel and Jodie reach similar big box office heights like the ones he’s achieved in recent years.”

Clearly Downey has enormous influence and is an integral part of the Marvel family; if anyone could get Gibson in one of the films, it would be RDJ. But boy, does he have a mountain of obstacles to overcome: namely, the court of public opinion after the actor’s infamous arrest for a DUI in 2006  where he made several anti-Semitic remarks. The source adds:

“Marvel is run by one of the richest and most prominent Israeli businessmen in Hollywood, and you can be sure even if Robert got down on his knees and begged, there’s no place for Mel.”

Downey Jr. should have no trouble getting Foster on board, but Gibson is another story. Naturally, the internet is already speculating on what role Gibson could fill and the prevailing choose seems to be uber-villain Thanos, which is for sure a very compelling idea.

Downey Jr.’s current Marvel deal does allow him to “consult on future parts of the Iron Man franchise,”  so it’s not completely unlikely to think he may be able to pull it off, but I’m guessing it will take some superhero levels of persuasion power.
