Guardians of the Galaxy is my favorite Marvel movie so far. I love Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, and we all know that Robert Downey Jr. loves Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, but that’s actually why it’s so surprising to hear him say that he also thinks Guardians is actually the best Marvel movie yet.
While making the press rounds for his new film The Judge, which is playing at the Toronto Film Festival, Downey told the Toronto Sun:
Galaxy in some ways is the best Marvel movie ever. And it’s odd for someone with — on occasion — an ego the size of mine to actually say that! It’s like you have a great quarterback, and his brother plays for another team, and then you say: ‘Look, this is their second cousin and we think he has a great arm and he should start.’ And then he goes and wins the Super Bowl!
Football metaphor aside, I’m sort of shocked to hear that Downey would admit that a Marvel film he had nothing to do with is better than the ones that he did. He seems like a nice enough guy, but I imagine making as much money as he has over the past five or six years has to do something crazy to your sense of perspective, and it’s actually refreshing to hear he’s able to take a step back and analyze things with a lack of bias. The dude has to be surrounded by yes men telling him how great he is all day every day, so for him to say something like this actually seems like big deal. And look – I don’t know the guy. I’m just saying his public persona is more like Tony Stark than anything else, and it’s more rare to see him saying something like this than it is to see him talk (even jokingly) about how awesome he is.
Either way, it gives us a good excuse to revisit the old argument: what is the best Marvel movie so far? Do you agree with Downey, or do you have your own pick? Let us know in the comments below.
