We know already that Mads Mikkelsen’s character in Rogue One – A Star Wars Story is the father of Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso, a scientist that’s not only forced to help the Empire build the Death Star, but as a recent international trailer also revealed, was responsible for getting the weapon’s plans to the Rebellion in the first place. However, it looks like we might be seeing more from Jyn’s childhood in the film, than just her relationship with her father.

In a bit of last-minute casting news, actress Valene Kane has revealed that she will be playing Jyn Erso’s mother in the film, named Lyra Erso. Speaking with Belfast Live recently, the actress talked about the role in the film, saying the following:

“I grew up watching Stars Wars and I didn’t believe it was happening until I was filming in Iceland. It has a really edgy independent vibe.”

I don’t imagine, if we’re hearing about it this late in the game, that Kane’s role in Rogue One will be all that substantial, and like Mikkelsen’s part, will probably be limited to mostly flashbacks and memories from Jyn.

With that being said, Kane’s comments about the film’s independent feel has been evident in all of the trailers released for it so far as well, and is probably something unavoidable when you have a filmmaker like Gareth Edwards behind the helm of it, no matter what those recent rumors might say about his continued involvement in the editing process.

With flashbacks and yet another lead heroine front and center though, it’s looking more and more like Rogue One will at the very least, live up to its promise in being a Star Wars film unlike any other so far.

Rogue One – A Star Wars Story is set to hit theatres on December 16th.
