Following the trailer announcement that debuted late yesterday afternoon, Disney and Lucasfilm have officially unveiled the very first theatrical trailer for Rogue One – A Star Wars Story, directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla), which will be the first film in the studio’s planned series of spin-off Star Wars films taking place outside of the main trilogy story.
Set before the events that kicked off A New Hope, the film follows the group of rebel soldiers and bounty hunters responsible for the acquisition of the Death Star plans that eventually led to its destruction at the hands of Luke Skywalker and the rebellion. It stars Felicity Jones, Forest Whitaker, Ben Mendelsohn, Riz Ahmed, Alan Tudyk, Mads Mikkelsen, Diego Luna, and more.
Check out the first trailer below:
One trailer in and I feel like we already know more about this movie than we did for The Force Awakens, but considering how obscure the film’s story is going to be, as well as its setting, I understand why the trailer might have to explain it a bit more.
With that being said as well, the film’s action and darkness looks amazing, whether it be the ground-level shots of the AT-ATs, or even the unique styles of fighting between Felicity Jones’ character, or Donnie Yen’s. Forest Whitaker’s character seems to be an even more rugged version of Obi-Wan’s from A New Hope possibly as well, giving advice and wisdom to Jones’ character on her mission.
The brief shots of Ben Mendelsohn’s villain would have been enough to put me onboard if I’m being honest though, and the stark contrast to the all-black outfit of Darth Vader and his character’s pure white costume here should be an interesting change of pace between the usual looks of our Star Wars villains. The return of Mon Mothma was a nice touch as well, and something that I imagine all Star Wars fans out there (myself included) will be more than happy to see here.
It’s looking and sounding more and more like Rogue One will be unlike any other Star Wars film we’ve seen before, and while we wait to see what Rian Johnson’s got up his sleeve with Episode VIII next year, Rogue One will hopefully provide an exploration to an era in the Star Wars universe that we’ve never seen onscreen before. Time to rebel.
Rogue One – A Star Wars Story is set to hit theatres on December 16th, 2016.
