After kicking up something of a storm by unintentionally starting an internet campaign to get Hellboy 3 produced, Ron Perlman now knows that he “touched a nerve” that he “didn’t even know was a nerve.”
In a new interview with Variety at the Monte Carlo TV Festival, the actor gave more context to how his comments on the possibility of the sequel came together, and what he makes of the fans’ passion. He said,
[…] I’ll tell you the same thing I’ve been telling everyone else, the Hellboy saga was meant to have a beginning, a middle and an end, and that, if you were loyal enough to us where you came and watched both those two movies that we made, we owe you a resolve. And there will come a time where he will have to live up to his destiny, which is to be the beast of the apocalypse, or if he has to suppress that destiny by sacrificing himself in some way so as to not destroy mankind but do the opposite. And that’s the discussion of the third film; I think it’s a discussion worth having, and I think it’s something we owe the fans and I’m being very clear about that […]
The actor also went on to say that he’s in “intermittent” contact with franchise writer/director Guillermo del Toro, but wouldn’t comment specifically on any conversations he may have had with the director in regards to a third Hellboy film. He did say, though, that he hasn’t been in touch with del Toro since the campaign on the internet kicked into high gear earlier this month. One surprising spot that Perlman was a little more specific about, though, was the status of a screenplay for a third Hellboy film.
When asked if it was written, Perlman responded,
It’s in Guillermo’s head. And he’s shared enough of it with me to know that it will be mind-blowing. I mean it will be mind-blowing. It will be great cinema. And if you are somebody who followed the first two movies, it will be even more mind-blowing because we have something… if you liked the first one and the second one, we have something really rock ’em, shock ’em in the third one.
Perlman can next be seen in the Amazon-exclusive drama series “Hand of God,” which premieres on the retailer’s Instant Video service this coming August. For more on Hellboy 3 as it takes shape, be sure to come back to GeekNation as it develops.
