RUMOR: Actor Donnie Yen Cast in Two Upcoming ‘Star Wars’ Films

By July 6, 2015

If these rumors are true, then Hong Kong martial arts star Donnie Yen is headed to a galaxy far, far away for an extended stay.

According to the tabloid Apple Daily (translated via Twitch Film), Yen will be joining the cast of both Rian Johnson’s Star Wars Episode VIII, as well as Gareth Edwards’ forthcoming spin-off film Star Wars: Rogue One. While the tabloid makes direct mention of Star Wars Episode VIII, Apple Daily has a reputation of embellishment, so it’s likely that any confirmation will come from official casting sources as opposed to other publications or websites. With Disney’s D23 expo in August rumored to be heavily Star Wars-focused for films, television, and theme park attractions, Disney may want to take the opportunity at their own expo to introduce other casting decisions made for the future of the Star Wars franchise.

Another rumor stated that Gareth Edwards was looking specifically for a Chinese actor for a part in Rogue One and then Yen may be it. That film will be the first spin-off Star Wars film to be released, and focus on the Rebels’ theft of the Death Star Plans, which they then use to destroy the station in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. None of this, though is concrete, but should Yen appear in both films, then it could show that Disney may want to establish a solid continuity link between the spin-off films, the original films, and their new sequel trilogy.

Star Wars: Rogue One will be released in theaters on December 16th, 2017. Star Wars Episode VIII is scheduled to be released on May 26th, 2017. For more on these films as they develop further, keep it on GeekNation!
