Rumor: ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ Could Feature the Return of THIS Original Trilogy Character

By March 17, 2016

Set photos from Star Wars: Episode VIII have been coming in waves over the past few weeks, teasing new spaceships, locations, and characters we can expect to see in Rian Johnson’s highly-anticipated follow-up film to The Force Awakens. Similar to the J.J. Abrams-directed predecessor though, with those images also come a lot of rumors.

Before we go any further though, I’m gonna go ahead and issue a minor spoiler warning in case this rumor ends up coming true, or for those of you who just want to avoid any rumblings about Episode VIII altogether. If so, turn away from this article now. You have been warned.

Based on a report from Making Star Wars earlier today, the site claims that the eighth installment could feature the return of Billy Dee Williams’ Lando Calrissian, and could also be traveling to Han Solo’s home planet of Corellia with new set photos coming from an on-location shoot in Dubrovnik, Croatia this week. Although, nothing has been confirmed and the production itself has been walled off, so there’s no way to know for sure who’s filming in the location, and who’s not.

Following his death in The Force Awakens though, and his upcoming spin-off film, it would make sense that Johnson and co. might want to set up Han Solo’s continued presence in the Star Wars franchise, even if it is by having a segment of the film take place on his home planet.

Calrissian on the other hand, was one of the few iconic characters from the Original Trilogy that wasn’t included in The Force Awakens, and his absence didn’t go unnoticed from fans. Williams himself has shared his interest to reprise the iconic role onscreen though before, and while he wasn’t included in Disney’s official cast announcement a few weeks back, the studio could be hoping to hold onto Williams’ involvement in the film a little bit longer than the rest.

Personally, I think it would be a smart move to bring Lando back into the story at some point, even if it’s just so Carrie Fisher’s General Leia and Chewbacca can have another familiar face around to fill the void now left by Han’s death.

Again, this is just a rumor for the time being, and as such, should be taken with a very large grain of salt. Lando’s return to the franchise has been long-speculated about by fans though, so it’ll be interesting to see how Johnson is planning on connecting the latest film to the Original Trilogy moving forward, or if he is at all, since many complained that The Force Awakens stayed too close to the plot and feel of the original films.

Star Wars: Episode VIII is set to hit theatres on December 15th, 2017.
