With the inclusion of the Joker — as played by Oscar winner Jared Leto — in the mix for the upcoming DC Comics film Suicide Squad, I suppose it was only a matter of time before the Dark Knight himself would come up in a rumor.
According to separate reports from Latino-Review and from Mark Hughes at Forbes, Affleck’s Batman will be included in the upcoming DC Comics anti-hero film to possibly set up a future conflict between he and Leto’s Joker in a future, standalone Batman film that takes place in the burgeoning DC Cinematic Universe that encompasses Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, and a slew of forthcoming films like Justice League, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Cyborg.
The report from Latino-Review first broke the idea that Batman will have a presence in the film, by basically saying that he’ll only be mentioned by other characters and only appearing in video recordings. The report from Mark Hughes at Forbes takes things a step further by saying that not only will Batman himself appear in the film, but that his specific, in-story scene will involve the Joker while potentially setting up a conflict between the two in a future film featuring Affleck’s Batman as the main character.
While production hasn’t even started on Suicide Squad yet, this kind of inclusion would definitely make a lot of sense if Warner Bros. wants to make the same kind of continuity infrastructure that Marvel Studios maintains between its films. Having DC’s most recognizable character serve as a bridge between one film and another is a pretty solid idea, but until the cameras start rolling, we won’t be sure exactly what will happen.
Suicide Squad will be released on August 5th, 2016, while Affleck’s Batman will make his first appearance on film in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens about four months earlier.
