Ryan Gosling Caught Between ‘Doctor Strange’ and ‘Suicide Squad’

By October 16, 2014

Ryan Gosling is probably starting to feel like the most popular kid in school right now, only this time, it’s two rival gangs of comics fans that are fighting over him.

According to a new report at The Hollywood Reporter, Gosling has been taking a lot of meetings for potential roles this week, and is being eyed to star in two major comics-based films. Marvel Studios is apparently very interested in him for their upcoming Doctor Strange film, apparently for the lead role which the studio has yet to cast. The report claims that Gosling may have been added to the short list in addition to names like Jake Gyllenhaal, Jared Leto, Matthew McConaughey, Ethan Hawke, Oscar Isaac, and Ewan McGregor. It’ll be interesting to see if Gosling opts for a Marvel Studios film, since their contracts are notoriously large in that they usually try and sign actors for several appearances across other Marvel Cinematic Universe properties.

Smith Robbie Hardy

Gosling is also being eyed for WB and DC Entertainment’s Suicide Squad film, announced yesterday to be directed by End of Watch helmer David Ayer. In addition to Gosling, the film is also reportedly seeking the involvement of Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street), Will Smith, and even Tom Hardy (who played DC Comics villain Bane in 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises). Director Ayer’s next film to be released in theaters will be Fury starring Brad Pitt, and it sounds like the studio and the director are going for big-name talent in order to establish the Suicide Squad as a major new cinematic franchise.

Gosling is apparently interested in taking on a big franchise after being on hiatus for a while (he and Eva Mendes also recently had a child). The actor has been resistant in the past to joining major franchises, but it looks like his overall outlook may have changed in the wake of some major changes in his own life. Still, though, which will he choose? He’s also being courted to play legendary magician Harry Houdini in an upcoming biopic, but it seems the actor is open to several different types of projects now that he’s had some down time away from work.

Gosling will next appear in a new film by director Terrence Malick along with Christian Bale and Michael Fassbender, as well as Shane Black’s new film The Nice Guys along with Russell Crowe. For more on this story as it develops, keep an eye on GeekNation!
