Scarlett Johansson and Lupita Nyong’o in Talks for Jon Favreau’s ‘Jungle Book’

Disney isn’t messing around when it comes to casting for their latest version of the Rudyard Kipling classic, The Jungle Book.

With Jon Favreau still in place as director and Idris Elba (Pacific Rim, Thor franchise) as the voice of the one and only Shere Khan, news comes down the wire (via THR) that Scarlett Johannson (The Avengers, Her) and recent Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years A Slave) are in negotiations to lend their talents to this live-action/CG hybrid.

Nyong’o is in talks to play Rakcha, the mother wolf who adopts Mowgli after his parents are killed in a tiger attack. Fun fact: Rakcha and Father Wolf are the ones to name Mowgli, which is short for “Mowgli the Frog” because of his lack of fur and his refusal to sit still.

While Nyong’o is in final negotiations for her role, Johannson (below) is in the early stages to voice Kaa, the python who uses his hypnotic eyes to put his prey into a trance before eating them and is the second banana villain to Shere Khan (Elba). ScarJo is still in the midst of shooting The Avengers: Age of Ultron, and since she’s pregnant, presumably voice work would be easier to accomplish over the next few months.

If this goes down, it could be interesting. Especially after Johannson’s amazing, Oscar-worthy performance in Her (which bolsters the argument that the Academy NEEDS to have an award for voiceover work added), and I have a feeling Nyong’o will make for an excellent mother wolf.

That being said, there’s still no sign of Mowgli as of yet which leads me to ask: Who would YOU like to see play Mowgli?

I think these ladies will add something very interesting to a film that has great potential, but I want to know what YOU think. Do you like Nyong’o and Johannson for these parts?
