Should we say a Goonie is coming to Stranger Things next season, or Samwise Gamgee?
Oh, forget it. RUDY! RUDY! RUDY!
Sean Astin is joining the second season of the hit retro-thriller from Netflix next season, according to The Hollywood Reporter, and he’s not alone. Joining him is another big name from our past – Paul Reiser, best known for his work on comedies like Mad About You.
Astin plays Bob Newby, a nerd who now manages the local RadioShack. He went to school with Winona Ryder’s Joyce and David Harbour’s Hopper, meaning Astin and Ryder could be appearing onscreen together for the first time since the 2009 comedy Stay Cool.
Reiser will have a much different role. He will play Dr. Owens, a “high-ranking member within the Department of Energy” who is tasked with cleaning up the events that transpired over the first season of Stranger Things.
Joining the two is Linnea Berthelsen, an up-and-coming Danish actress who also will star in The Desert, a British sci-fi miniseries expected to debut in January. Berthelsen will play Roman, an “emotionally damaged, magnetic young woman who suffered a great loss as a child.”
It’s not clear how many episodes the three will be in, or really most other details. What we do know is the second season will see a return of regulars like Cara Buono, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Matthew Modine, Joe Kerry, Noah Schnapp Finn Wolfhard, and the return of Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven.
Astin, of course, is known for his role in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, as well as playing the title role in the 1993 inspirational sports film Rudy. More recently, he had a nine-episode stint on FX’s The Strain, and recently finished filming Bad Kids of Crestview Academy, directed by former Farscape star Ben Browder.
Astin was nominated for an Oscar in 1995 for his short film Kangaroo Court.
Reiser not only starred in Mad About You, but also another 1990s hit, My Two Dads. More recently, he’s had recurring roles in TripTank for Comedy Central and another 1980s-based series from Amazon, Red Oaks.
Reiser earned 10 Emmy nominations for his work on Mad About You, both as an actor and an executive producer.
The second season of Stranger Things is expected on Netflix next summer.
