The Uncharted film (based on Sony’s popular Playstation video game franchise) has experienced some major ups and downs over the past couple of years. American Hustle director David O. Russell was hired to write and direct the movie at one point, with Mark Wahlberg as Nathan Drake and Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci in supporting roles. After Russell dropped out, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg were asked to direct (which obviously never happened), and Divergent director Neil Burger was hired on before leaving the project a few months later. Now, The Wrap reports that a new director is in negotiations to helm the project: Horrible Bosses director Seth Gordon.
For those of you who have never played Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, it’s an action adventure story that follows treasure hunter Nathan Drake and journalist Elena Fisher as he hunts for the mythical city of El Dorado on a quest to reclaim treasure from his ancestor, Sir Francis Drake. These games (the first has had two sequels so far) are my favorite games of all time, and they’re clearly influenced by Indiana Jones and some of the 80s and 90s action movies we grew up watching. I can’t recommend the games highly enough.
Gordon, who also directed Four Christmases, the terrible comedy Identity Thief and the excellent documentary The King of Kong, doesn’t immediately strike me as the kind of guy whose resume proves he’s capable of handling something with the scale of Uncharted. But I also like to give people the benefit of the doubt, and if you look at Jon Favreau as an example, he’s someone who proves that it’s possible to come from a small scale background and succeed on a massive blockbuster.
The success of an Uncharted film will largely depend on the actor they choose to play Nathan Drake, and while Nathan Fillion’s name was thrown around a few years ago, he’s not the right guy for this part anymore. (Despite the fact that the character physically resembles him.) Who would you like to see play Drake in a film version of Uncharted? Let us know below.
