‘Sherlock Holmes 3’ Confirmed by Producer, May Begin Filming This Fall

By May 19, 2016

Tony Stark isn’t the only iconic character that Robert Downey Jr’s brought to life on the big screen over the past few years, and following his recent comments about a third installment in the franchise, it looks like his version of Sherlock Holmes will be returning to the big screen after all, with production hopefully set to start later this year.

While recently speaking with Collider during the press tour for Shane Black’s The Nice Guys, producer Joel Silver provided a much-needed update on the status of Sherlock Holmes 3, revealing that the creative team already has a script for the project, though the timetable isn’t currently finalized:

“It looks like it could happen this fall. Downey said he wants to do it. He’s gotta launch into another Avengers movie, right after the New Year, so we’re trying to get it done. We have a script that we like. Jude [Law] is available and Downey is available, and we’re hoping we can get it done. If it works, great. If not, we’ll do it another time. But, it looks like it could happen now.”

His comments are similar to Downey’s from earlier this year as well, though the confirmation of an already completed script does make it seem like Sherlock Holmes 3 could happen this year after all. The Iron Man actor does have a bit of a full plate on his hands however, with the massive Avengers: Infinity War set to begin shooting later this year, though it sounds like he may not be needed on set until possibly early 2017.

Considering how long it’s taken to get to this point though, as well as the actors’ increasingly busy schedules, is there the possibility for Sherlock Holmes 3 to be the final film in a trilogy? According to Silver – it doesn’t look like it:

“I hope [it’s not the last one]. I don’t think so. How many Bond films have they made? As long as there’s a character, we can work with it. It’s not an end story. We can keep going, as long as people want to do it. It’s [the actor’s] call. They have to say, ‘Okay, I’m ready to go.’ I read about them making another Bad Boys. If they want to do it, then you try to get it done.”

Ritchie is currently in post-production work on his Knights of the Roundtable: King Arthur film for Warner Bros., which could mean a possible opening in his schedule later this year to return for the third Sherlock installment, and it seems like all of the pieces may finally be in place for the newest, big screen Sherlock Holmes outing to finally begin moving forwards again. All that’s left to do now, is wait and see if it actually happens or not.
