With filming set to start next week on Sinister 2, we’ve finally learned some details about what’s going on with this sequel to the 2012 supernatural horror film.

But first, a recap.

sinister

In the first film, a once-great true-crime writer named Ellison Oswalt (Ethan Hawke) moves his family (without their knowledge) into a house where previous families who’ve also lived there were murdered. It is there he finds a cache of 8mm home movies which turn out to be snuff films that suggest the murder he is currently researching for a new true-crime novel is the work of a demon known as Bughuul or “Mr. Boogie.” And of course, it doesn’t end well for the Oswalt family as they end up – spoiler alert – becoming the stars of their own “home movie.”

According to Collider, Shannyn Sossamon (A Knight’s Tale, “Wayward Pines”) will take the lead as a protective mother, who moves her 9-year-old twin sons (played by actual twins Robert and Dartanian Sloan) into a house “marked for death” (which I’m assuming is the same house from the first film), and they find themselves next on the list for one of Mr. Boogie’s special home movies.

James-Ransone

The only returning cast member from the first film thus far is James Ransone (“Generation Kill” “The Wire”) who reprises his role as “Deputy So-and-So.” I’m guessing we’ll see more of Mr. Boogie too, but whether actor Nick King will reprise the role is anyone’s guess. Sinister‘s original director Scott Derrickson has re-teamed with writer C. Robert Cargill to pen the sequel, and they’ve turned over directing duties to relative newcomer Ciaran Foy (Citadel) with absolute trust.

The first film was pretty decent, but does it warrant a sequel? I guess we’ll find out when the film arrives on August 21st, 2015.
