‘Skull Island’ Adds ‘Compton’ Actor Corey Hawkins

Corey Hawkins Cast in 'Skull Island'

Kong: Skull Island has had a bit more trouble getting into production than the fans or studio may have predicted. After both J.K. Simmons and Michael Keaton dropped out of the project, the film has been adding cast members somewhat periodically the last few weeks with Brie Larson being the newest addition to a still strong, although smaller, cast. Russell Crowe has also been rumored to be circling the project as well.

The film is set to be a prequel, and although not much is known about the plot as of yet, the movie will take place on the mysterious island where King Kong made his home, as a group of explorers find their way through the island.

Well, Legendary is certainly doing everything they can to make up for the loss of both Simmons and Keaton, as Variety has recently reported that Straight Outta Compton star Corey Hawkins has officially signed on to join the cast of the film, in an unknown role. Max Borenstein, John Gatins, and Dan Gilroy penned the script for the film with Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni producing with Mary Parent. Alex Garcia and Eric McLeod will serve as executive producers.

The film is steadily assembling quite a strong cast of young actors, with Hawkins set for a massive breakout hit following the release of this year’s Straight Outta Compton. He’s been receiving a large amount of critical praise for his performance as Dr. Dre in the N.W.A. biopic, and it looks like Legendary is hoping to keep Hawkins close on hand for the next few years.

Godzilla seemed to do fairly well for the studio, and it looks like Kong: Skull Island is their next big push at bringing monster movies back. Considering the amount of young talent they’re surrounding the picture with, both in its cast, screenwriters, and having Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer) as the film’s director, it looks like Kong: Skull Island has a lot going for it for a movie that just recently lost two of its biggest stars.

Kong: Skull Island is set to hit theaters on March 10th, 2017!
