Looks like we’re going to have yet another horror remake to contend with! Which I guess isn’t as scary as contending with a knife-wielding psychopath, but hey…remakes can be pretty scary, and not generally in a good way.
According to Deadline, Sleepaway Camp, the slasher classic about a summer camp being terrorized by a mystery killer, is about to get some remake love. Ex-Fox/New Line executive Jeff Katz has plans to reboot the franchise in a modern setting and has optioned the rights from original writer/director Robert Hiltzik, original producer Michele Tatosian, and the original film’s lead, Felissa Rose. Hiltzik, Tatosian and Rose will also produce. No word yet on a writer.
Coincidentally, Scream Factory had their own Sleepaway Camp news to announce yesterday:
Happy Halloween everyone! We are super excited to announce to you on this special day that we will be releasing the original uncut SLEEPAWAY CAMP film on Blu-ray for the first time next Spring!
This will most definitely be a Collector’s Edition (new art is being worked on it as we type) and is planned to come loaded with great extras that will be announced at a later date. We love this film and will certainly aim to please fans of Angela, Aunt Martha, cussing cousin Ricky, Judy, Meg and the rest of Camp Arawak’s memorable counselors and campers.
So that should satiate all of the fans who find the idea of a reboot blasphemous.
With all of the terrible sequels out there, it might be hard for some to understand why the original Sleepaway Camp became such a cult classic, but it truly was a stand-out when it was released and remains a favorite of many horror fans today. I’m a huge lover of 80s slasher/horror flicks and have adored Sleepaway Camp since I first saw it. I mean… I don’t think anyone who watches the movie sees that ending coming? I love that ending. LOVE IT! It definitely helped elevate the film above just your standard slasher/camp fare.
As far as a remake goes, in general I’m on the fence about remakes. It’s not that I find them all terrible, I just kind of don’t see the point when you know so many potentially great movies go unmade. But at the same time, I don’t find a remake of this movie in particular to be a true insult to the original. I reserve that distinction for the Psycho remake and the Psycho remake alone.
What do you think of a Sleepaway Camp reboot? Let us know in the comments!
