One of the most iconic video game characters of all time is on his way to the big screen, although, we’re still not entirely sure it’s a good thing.

Usually popping up in movies about video game characters, but still has yet to undergo the trauma of an unsuccessful film adaptation, Sonic the Hedgehog is reportedly set to make his first solo silver screen appearance in just a few short years. At least, according to the President and CEO of Sega, Hajime Satomi.

While recently speaking with The Worldfolio (via Engadget), Satomi revealed plans to make a Sonic the Hedgehog movie for release in 2018… and it will be a live-action/CGI hybrid. Yay.

“Sega Sammy Group is currently planning with Sony Pictures to create a live-action and animation hybrid Sonic the Hedgehog movie scheduled for release in 2018. Like with this CG animation production, we would like to expand our business into other entertainment areas beyond what we are currently involved.”

I’ll be honest, there isn’t a single bone in my body that wants to see an Alice in Wonderland version of Sonic. Now, that could just be me jumping to conclusions and they could end up going a very cool Who Framed Roger Rabbit?-esque style for the film instead, but I doubt it… because that would be awesome. No, something tells me it’ll be more like the Wonderland franchise or even Sam Raimi’s Oz: The Great and Powerful. Which I had more than enough of in those films.

I hope they end up suprising me and taking a much more artistic route with this one because as of right now, my anticipation for this film is practically nonexistent.

The Sonic the Hedgehog movie will apparently hit theatres in 2018… apparently.
