Chances are that if you’re a big fan of the hit FX original series “Sons of Anarchy,” you’re chomping at the bit to see how the show wraps up its 7 season run in less than a week. Fans of the show were likely also excited to see that the series’ companion book, “Sons of Anarchy: The Official Collector’s Edition,” had shipped to some retailers a little early this week. What those fans may have been disappointed to find out in opening that book, though, was that it featured plot details from the as-yet unaired series finale, effectively spoiling the experience.
In a new report from Variety, its detailed that the companion book was originally scheduled to go on sale on December 10th, one day after the series finale airs on FX. The book features detailed breakdowns of every episode of the series, including the finale, as well as, “personal messages and photos from the cast” and “in-depth behind the scenes information.”
Time Home Entertainment, the publisher of the actual book, released a statement on the matter that reads, “As the publisher, we had a very strict embargo in place for the on-sale date of Wednesday, December 10, 2014. We are aggressively investigating the circumstances that led to the unauthorized and premature distribution of the book.”
It has been brought to my attention that our SOA Collector’s Edition Book has been sent out a week early by some distributors and book outlets. This book contains details about the final episode of the series. This, my friends is a storyteller’s worst nightmare. I wanted this book to be a compliment to the show. It contains personal messages and photos from the cast, in-depth behind the scenes information and detailed breakdown of episodes. It’s a smart, well-conceived book that I was very excited for the fans to have. AFTER the motherf—— finale.
There are a thousand f—— people I can blame. And I assure you, by the time I am done, my f—— basket will be filled with heads of incompetent c—-. But as far as the fans go, the burden is on me. I f—– up. It was my idea for the book, so ultimately, I am to blame. So if you received a book, I apologize. I ask that you not share your wrath or pain or opinion in social media so as to not spoil the experience of others. There is no excuse for utter ineptitude. It pains me that this will be the parting memory of some fans. I hope you all tune in for the finale. It plays much better than it reads.
It’s very clear to see that this mistake has royally angered Sutter, but hopefully the reaction to the book’s early release has kept more people from finding out the information ahead of time.
The series finale to “Sons of Anarchy” airs on Tuesday, December 9th on FX.
