Kurt Sutter has made a name for himself as one of the most brutal, and best writers in the television and film industry today. After making an impact with his work on the critically-acclaimed FX police drama, The Shield, Sutter continued his working relationship with the network and created one of the most beloved shows of the past decade in Sons of Anarchy.
The series – which on the surface initially appeared to be just a kick ass show about the bad men and women running motorcycle clubs – turned into a Shakespearean tale about the power struggle between allies and foes, the imprints fathers leave on their sons, love and friendship, and so much more. Following it’s satisfying series finale late last year, and as we draw closer and closer to Sutter’s newest project with FX, The Bastard Executioner, this news shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.
It has officially been revealed that Sutter is in the early development stages of a Sons of Anarchy spin-off series with FX. While fans might have been hoping for a possible prequel focusing on Jax’s (Charlie Hunnam) father, or a sequel, it looks like Sutter has something else in mind, as the series will reportedly focus on SAMCRO’s occasional allies, the Mayans, run by Marcus Alvarez (Emilio Rivera). Whether it will tell the Mayans’ origin stories, or take place after the SOA series finale is still unknown, as Sutter did not comment on the spin-off’s time period in relation to the original series.
While this is definitely a different kind of spin-off than SOA fans might have expected, or even wanted, there’s no denying that whatever story Sutter ends up deciding to tell will likely be an intriguing one for both those who watched the original series, and newcomers to the spin-off. More details will likely be released over the next few months as well, the further along into the project Sutter and the network get.
Considering how palpable and real of a world Sutter created within those seasons of SOA though - the possibility of getting to see more of that underground world, but from a different perspective is an interesting proposition at the very least. Who knows, we might even see some of our favorite SAMCRO members pop up from time-to-time?
The Sons of Anarchy spin-off is currently in development.
