There has been a lot of hype surrounding Spectre, the latest film in the James Bond franchise over the past few months. Following the series’ last incredible outing with Skyfall too, and director Sam Mendes returning at the helm and Daniel Craig reprising his role as 007 – it’s easy to see why fans have been looking forward to the film so much. The trailers have promised a movie similar in tone and style to Skyfall, but with a story combining some of the best elements of both classic and contemporary Bond stories as well, and it looks like it could be one of the standouts of this year’s heavy awards season.
Much of the film’s plot and secrets have remained a mystery up until this point, with Sony only releasing a select number of trailers and images online, in the hopes of maintaining a fair amount of surprise when audiences go into the theatre for the first time next month. However, following the recent release of Sam Smith’s theme song for the film, and the release date drawing ever closer, fans can most likely prepare themselves for a much larger promotional presence in the coming weeks.
Sony Pictures Entertainment has shared the final trailer for Spectre online earlier today too, and it features what could end up being one of the best exchanges Bond has had with one of his foes in years. Check it out below:
Here’s the film’s official synopsis:
“A cryptic message from the past sends James Bond on a rogue mission to Mexico City and eventually Rome, where he meets Lucia Sciarra (Monica Bellucci), the beautiful and forbidden widow of an infamous criminal. Bond infiltrates a secret meeting and uncovers the existence of the sinister organisation known as SPECTRE. Meanwhile back in London, Max Denbigh (Andrew Scott), the new head of the Centre for National Security, questions Bond’s actions and challenges the relevance of MI6, led by M (Ralph Fiennes). Bond covertly enlists Moneypenny (Naomie Harris) and Q (Ben Whishaw) to help him seek out Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux), the daughter of his old nemesis Mr White (Jesper Christensen), who may hold the clue to untangling the web of SPECTRE. As the daughter of an assassin, she understands Bond in a way most others cannot. As Bond ventures towards the heart of SPECTRE, he learns of a chilling connection between himself and the enemy he seeks, played by Christoph Waltz.”
Yes, let the continued Blofeld rumors continue. While Sam Mendes has remained adamant about not revealing any secrets from the film before its release, including the possible true identity of Christoph Waltz’s Oberhauser, who many fans have rumored as being the newest incarnation of the iconic Bond villain, Ernst Stavro Blofeld. In the past films, Blofeld was the secret head of SPECTRE, and the blatant similarities between Waltz’s Oberhauser and the character are almost too apparent to ignore that at this point, the only thing’s that’s missing is a shot of Oberhauser lightly stroking a white cat in his lap.
The trailer of course features that dramatic confrontation between Oberhauser and 007, and several sequences of Bond trying to kill his archnemesis in the film. Lea Seydoux’s Madeleine Swann is shown prominently throughout as well, and considering her clear connections to SPECTRE in the film as well as the possible romance hinted at in the film’s theme song - it’s possible she’ll be playing an even larger part in Bond’s story than we might think. Hoyte van Hoytema’s absolutely gorgeous cinematography is too amazing not to mention as well, and for someone stepping into the rather large footprints cinematographer Roger Deakins left in Skyfall as well, it looks like Hoytema has done a spectacular job at creating the look of this film. It’s only one more month away, so now all we have to do, is wait.
Spectre is set to hit theatres on November 6th.
