Secrecy is nothing new when it comes to Marvel Studios. A majority of their projects are shrouded in mystery leading up to their respective theatrical release dates, but the farther along we get into the MCU plans – the more the secrecy seems to grow. Nothing quite matches the amount of mystery surrounding next year’s Captain America: Civil War either. Aside from small plot details here and there, as well as the reveal of the movie’s teams – almost nothing is actually known about the film’s story or its characters.
Perhaps the part of the movie that is being kept the most under wraps too, is the official introduction of Tom Holland’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So far, all that we know about this newest iteration of the character is that he is still in High School around the age of 15, and that he will have already been operating as Spider-Man in New York for about a year by the time we meet him in Civil War. We have no idea what his costume will look like in the film, or what his role in the Civil War story will end up being.
According to a new report by Heroic Hollywood though, it looks like we could have some new details regarding Peter’s actual Spidey costume in the film. Keep in mind that none of this is confirmed at this point, and should all be taken with a grain of salt, but either way, these details are pretty cool. The report states that a 15-minute screening of Civil War was shown for some theatre staff recently that contained the first official look at Holland’s costume in the film. Apparently, Peter will be wearing the old school, thick spider logo on his suit instead of the more recent slimmer, thin spider. For those of you who need a reminder of what that logo looks like, check out the image below:
If this is true (again, nothing has been confirmed at this point), it does seem to fall in line with Marvel’s past pattern of honoring the original looks and costumes from the comics, and would also make sense considering how much Kevin Feige and co. have been stressing taking the Spider-Man character back to his original roots in the MCU. There’s nothing that screams original Spider-Man quite like this logo would too.
If this is true though, then I’m also going to go ahead and cross my fingers that we’re going to see some webbing underneath his arms as well because as a major Spider-Man fan – that’s something that I would be more than happy to see on the silver screen for the first time.
These rumors keep pointing towards Marvel actually treating the Spider-Man character as more than just a piece of merchandise that they can package and sell though, which is something that I think Spidey fans have wanted for years. After some incredibly disappointing recent installments in the Spider-Man franchises due to studio meddling too, it honestly sounds like Marvel is planning on giving fans the Peter Parker Spider-Man that they’ve been waiting years for. We want the awkward kid in High School with a double life, and we want the energy and charisma that the character has always brought to the comic book world, and I think we’re finally going to get that next year.
Captain America: Civil War is set to hit theatres on May 6th, 2016.
