Steven Spielberg is one of the most acclaimed directors of all time. His films are beloved icons of popular culture, and his legacy in cinematic history is unparalleled. The man is a legend, and any time he releases a new film it’s guaranteed to be a significant draw at the box office.
But he ain’t no Star Wars.
Today it was announced (via Collider) that Spielberg’s next flick, the highly anticipated Ready Player One, would be changing its release date from December 15, 2017 to March 30, 2018. The reason for the switch? December 15, 2017 is the same date that Star Wars: Episode VIII will be released and…well…do I really need to explain this further? After watching The Force Awakens steamroll everything in its path, the powers-that-be at Warner Bros. didn’t really have much choice in the matter. I mean…it’s Star Wars. Don’t nobody want no part of that.
Granted, a Spielberg-directed adaptation of a hit novel like Ready Player One could have hypothetically provided a bit more competition for Episode VIII than Force Awakens faced (all due respect to Alvin & The Chipmunks 4), but it would’ve still been fighting a losing battle. Plus, given the video game-related plot of Ready Player One, the two films were bound to attract a similar crowd, and as long as there are still tickets available for Episode VIII, that’s the film theater-goers are going to choose. You don’t want a film like this (especially considering its director) to look foolish, so a release date change was the only solution.
As it stands now, Spielberg’s biggest competition is The Wolf Man, which is far less daunting than Rian Johnson’s insanely anticipated Star Wars installment. Late March is now becoming the unofficial start to the summer blockbuster season (see: Batman v Superman), so now Spielberg’s flick can take the credit for getting that party started. Even though Ready Player One is high on a lot of Most Anticipated lists, which will make this push back disappointing, in the long run it will be much better for both the film and fans.
Ready Player One is set for release on March 30, 2018. Go see it so Steven Spielberg will be happy.
