Now that J.J. Abrams has his arms wrapped tightly around this year’s Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, it’s easy to forget about the two films that probably played major factors in why he landed the Star Wars gig in the first place. In fact, if it weren’t for the 2009 Star Trek and it’s subsequent 2013 sequel, Star Trek: Into Darkness, Abrams might not be directing Episode VII, Chris Pine might not be the movie star we know him as today, and we wouldn’t even be talking about Star Trek Beyond at this point.
However, now that Abrams has left the franchise in the capable hands of Fast Five director, Justin Lin, from a script penned by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung, it looks like the Star Trek franchise is getting ready to go into both new and familiar territory. The new film is said to be more in the vein of the Original Series and will tell the kinds of stories that made Trek fans fall in love with the franchise in the first place decades ago. Now that production has officially begun on the movie too, it looks like we might finally found out more about Star Trek Beyond in the coming months.
Earlier today, in fact, ScreenCrush released a set video from the film that not only shows the filming of one of the movie’s scenes, but also some of the new costumes and our first look at Sofia Boutella’s (Kingsman: The Secret Service) unnamed, new alien character. Check out the video below:
The video features Boutella’s character, Pine’s Captain Kirk, Pegg’s Scotty, & Anton Yelchin’s Chekov appearing one-by-one out of the top of a hatch into the exterior of what we can likely assume is a foreign planet, judging by the massive amounts of green screen. Boutella is nearly unrecognizable as the character, and while next-to-nothing is known about her in the film at this point, it looks like she’ll be more than just an interesting addition to the team.
The new Starfleet uniforms are awesome, to say the least. Both Kirk and Chekov were sporting the new blazers, while Scotty was in his usual red uniform, and Pine already looks like he’s showing more of the charm and wit of Shatner’s original Kirk than he has in any of the past films. While both the 2009 film, and Into Darkness featured Kirk’s character’s journey towards becoming the Captain we know him to be, it looks like Beyond might find him already there, or the closest he’s ever been. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
Star Trek Beyond is set to hit theatres on July 8th, 2016.
