So far, Marvel’s Star Wars comic books have been pretty great about shining a light on different, untold aspects and characters of the Star Wars universe, with very few stumbles scattered about here and there. However, after already revealing more about characters like Obi-Wan Kenobi, Lando, and Han Solo, it looks like their newest story is going to take on one of the universe’s most beloved, and mysterious characters.
Announced today, the next “interlude” in the ongoing Star Wars series will once again find Luke Skywalker combing through Obi-Wan Kenobi’s old journal he found on Tatooine, though this time he’ll be learning more about his other Jedi Master.
Written by Jason Aaron with art from Salvador Larocca, the new story will shine a light on none other than Jedi Master Yoda, not only featuring the first encounter between Luke and him, but also focusing on a time in Yoda’s life that has yet to be explored – the time before the events of The Phanton Menace.
According to Aaron, the new story will give readers their first chance to see Yoda not as just an iconic, bad ass Jedi Master and warrior, but at a time before he became as synonymous in the Jedi Order as we’ve always known him to be. It may also feature him encountering a foe, that actually poses a challenge for him, that could test him in more ways than just force strength:
I don’t know if we’ve put a pin in exactly when it takes place. It does take place before Phantom Menace. We do get a brief appearance by Qui-Gon and young Obi-Wan, so that’ll probably help date it.
… This story takes place before the Clone Wars and it’s set in a world we’ve never seen before. I was always just intrigued by that idea. You know, we’ve seen Yoda as the teacher, as the wise Jedi Master, but I wanted to see Yoda just as the Jedi. So this puts him on a very unusual adventure. The other big challenge with Yoda, of course, is finding something that’s a challenge for him, right? Who can pose a threat to Yoda? I think we came up with an interesting answer to that question. That’s part of the mystery of this story. There’s a very specific reason that this is going to be quite the challenge for Yoda. It’s not a matter of just him being the more powerful Jedi. It’s a bit trickier than that.
Yoda has always been a tricky character, in my opinion, in the Star Wars universe, because of how good and memorable he is in both the Original Trilogy and even in the Prequels as well. We really don’t know all that much about him, and while it’s exciting to think about revealing more from his past, there’s also the danger of revealing too much about the Jedi Master, and taking away some of the mystique and knowledge that makes him so great.
I’m looking forward to Aaron’s new story though, and seeing just what kind of new light he decides to shed on one of Star Wars‘ best and most beloved characters.
