No one is more excited for Star Wars Episode VII The Force Awakens, than me. I live and I die by my Star Wars. The only thing that will get me even MORE excited? Star Wars Episode VIII.
Rumors have been circulating about potential parts being sought after behind the casting doors, with confirmation also coming in for the villain side of things as well as the appointment of Colin Trevorrow for Episode IX. Now let’s add some more fuel to the fire in the form of a shortlist of actresses reading for Episode VIII.
Jeff Sneider over at theWrap just dropped a shortlist of amazing talent, currently being looked at by Episode VIII director Rian Johnson and Lucasfilm. They are also, reportedly, doing screen tests with John Boyega’s character of Finn.
Golden Globe winner Gina Rodriguez (“Jane the Virgin”), Golden Globe nominee Tatiana Maslany (“Orphan Black”) and “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” star Olivia Cooke are considered the top contenders for the new female lead in Rian Johnson‘s “Star Wars: Episode VIII,” multiple individuals familiar with the casting situation told TheWrap.
For the Eagle-Eyed/Star Wars geek and follower (like me) will notice, Tatiana Maslany was also rumored to be chasing and/or considered a front runner for the Rogue One lead that eventually went to Felicity Jones. So this makes total and complete sense. Star Wars like Marvel (both under Disney) like to find and work with talent they like. It’s no surprise to me that Tatiana is still on their radar.
As for the other two, Olivia Cooke and Gina Rodriguez, both are solid choices. As GeekNation reported here, we knew they were going after a strong female lead. We then speculated (and heard through a solid source) that said female lead might be a Solo. As in Han Solo. There is still no word or confirmation if this is true but worth noting is most if not all speculation has turned to Daisy Ridley’s ‘Rey’ character as being a Solo. But, as JJ Abrams is notorious for doing – a mystery box usually awaits the speculator. And because we’re still months away from The Force Awakens, Ridley’s character remains… safely anonymous. Those of you wondering what that last part meant, it’s a nod to Obi-Wan’s line from Return of the Jedi. I needed to class this article up with some Star Wars references.
In the end, there is no amount of speculation that can do justice with this group. Whether the actress who nails the part is a Solo, a Skywalker, or a whole new character completely… the only thing to do is wait. And we Star Wars fans don’t like to wait.
Star Wars: Episode VIII is set to be released on May 26th, 2017!
