Warning: This post will contain spoilers for Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens.
After being delayed about seven months from the summer of 2017 to the late holiday season, Walt Disney Studios has officially confirmed the start of production on Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII, the highly-anticipated (to put it lightly) follow-up to Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens. The announcement has come in probably the best way imaginable as well.
Accompanied by the first official footage from the sequel, picking up right where The Force Awakens left off with Daisy Ridley’s Rey extending a certain family heirloom to Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker, three new actors have also been confirmed to be joining the cast including the previously-confirmed Benicio del Toro as well as Laura Dern and Kelly Marie Tran (CollegeHumor Originals).
Considering the film is almost two years away from its theatrical release, this is probably the best tease for the film that Disney and Lucasfilm could have released. Check out the announcement video below:
The footage isn’t much, but I imagine it will be hard for any Star Wars fan out there to watch this without getting chills. Not only does it confirm when Episode VIII will begin too, apparently right when The Force Awakens ends, but also gives us our first (albeit tiny) look at Johnson’s directing style for the sequel.
With the writer-director apparently performing minor rewrites on the project recently as well, focusing more on the characters introduced in Episode VII rather than completely new additions, Johnson’s creative process behind the film has apparently been as smooth as possible. As someone who’s been excited for Johnson’s eighth installment in the franchise ever since it was originally announced as well, seeing the interesting, apparently dark directions he’s going to take the franchise in, can do nothing but make this Star Wars fan giddy with excitement.
Star Wars: Episode VIII is set to hit theatres on December 15th, 2017.
