‘Star Wars Rebels’ Characters May Tie Into the Live-Action Films

The recent explosion of news surrounding Rogue One: A Star Wars Story came with a major surprise when it was confirmed that Saw Gerrera, a character who originally appeared in The Clone Wars animated series, would also be featured in the upcoming live-action film.

But fans of the hit Disney XD series Star Wars Rebels have been anxious to see some of their favorite heroes – or villains – make the leap to the big screen, and according to executive producer Simon Kinberg, that possibility might be closer than we think.

Speaking to Moviefone, he said:

“What’s lovely is, obviously, we’ve brought in characters from Clone Wars in the second season, and we keep sort of bringing characters from the original movies and sort of deepening the relationships between our core characters, the Ghost crew. So it’s trying to balance the two different things, like the original cast from the first season with Clone Wars, with characters from the original movies, and maybe even feeding into future movies.”

Granted, this isn’t exactly a confirmation, but when you start looking at the Star Wars timeline, it would make a lot of sense. Star Wars Rebels takes place about 4 years before the events of A New Hope, and the upcoming Rogue One is set shortly before that film’s opening sequence, so it would hardly come as a surprise if there was a bit of crossover there.

Personally, I think it’s much more likely that we would see characters from Rogue One, or perhaps even the Han Solo spinoff, appearing in animated form before we see Ezra, Kanan or Sabine on the big screen. After all, Rebels has already hosted several characters from the existing films, including Lando Calrissian, Darth Vader and even a younger version of Princess Leia – so maybe the third season of the series will offer up a cameo from the likes of Jyn Erso, or a certain intergalactic smuggler.

With San Diego Comic-Con right around the corner, you can bet that Star Wars Rebels will have a few surprises to reveal, so stay tuned to GeekNation for the latest news.
