Coming off of the success of The Clone WarsStar Wars Rebels had some mighty high expectations to live up to when it premiered just last year. Taking place in the time between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, the series offered fans their first in-depth look at a specific time period of the Star Wars universe that they had always longed to see. While the first season had its rough patches, and disappointing episodes throughout though, it seemed like fans left the season looking forward to this year’s follow-up, and what might happen next to Ezra, Kanan, Hera, Zeb, Sabine, and the rest of the Ghost crew.

With the Star Wars canon continuing to expand and grow with each new comic, book, and video game too, it seems viewers can look forward to more adventures in the Star Wars universe on the small screen as well, as Disney and Lucasfilm have officially announced that Star Wars Rebels has been renewed for a third season next year, which will continue to follow our lead group of rebels through some new, and exciting adventures.

Considering the heightened anticipation and energy surrounding the Star Wars property right now leading up to the release of Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, it doesn’t come as much of a surprise that the studios might capitalize on the current hype. While the noise around the second season of Rebels has slightly died down since the “Siege of Lothal” premiere earlier this summer too, the fan-following remains as strong as ever leading into its midseason finale on December 12th.

Lucasfilm SVP of Development Kiri Hart commented on the series’ renewal with the following:

“We’re very proud of our incredibly creative Rebels team. The show continues to tell fun, heartfelt, exciting newStar Wars stories week after week, and it’s beloved by fans of all ages. Season Three will see our rebel heroes face new obstacles and find new allies in their fight against the Empire.”

Up until this point, Rebels has done an incredibly good job at incorporating its story and characters into the canon of the Original Trilogy, and some of the pre-established material, with characters like C3-PO, R2D2, Lando Calrissian, and Darth Vader already being featured heavily throughout. However, it’s also been the only new onscreen Star Wars property that fans have gotten to experience for the past year, and it’ll be interesting to see how the series’ tone and story might change in its post-Force Awakens life.

Star Wars Rebels airs every Wednesday night on Disney XD.
