The first season of Star Wars Rebels started with a much more kid-friendly tone and story than I think some fans might have liked. However, the further into the season the series went, the more and more it started to adopt and reflect some of the mythological darkness of the original trilogy. It all led up to the show’s gold standard so far in my opinion in this summer’s Rebels special, titled “The Seige of Lothal” that found our lead group of characters facing off against Darth Vader himself. In my opinion, it was at that point when I think Rebels started to really reach its full potential.
Leading into Rebels season two in a few weeks though, it’s clear that Dave Filoni, Simon Kinberg, and the rest of the show’s creative team have some very big and expansive plans for season’s main narrative this time around. With the introduction of our new Inquisitors, the return of Captain Rex and several other characters from The Clone Wars, the adventures of the Ghost crew, and the continued story of Ahsoka Tano (Ashley Eckstein) – it looks like Rebels isn’t pulling back any punches this season leading up to the release of The Force Awakens this winter.
A new full trailer for the sophomore season was revealed today during New York Comic-Con and it features glimpses at some intriguing new revelations for our lead group of characters, and some epic battles in store for us. Ahsoka’s back everyone, and she looks more bad ass than ever.
The storyline and disappearance of Ezra’s parents last season was something hinted at and touched on several times, and usually came whenever he was having trouble connecting with the force, so the possibility that they might have escaped could have either terrific or disastrous effects for the young, force-capable boy depending on how it fully plays out. The Inquisitors this season look a bit more mischievous and dangerous than Jason Isaacs’ was last season too, which should help to bring some more variety to the show’s villains this time around.
However, I dare any Star Wars fans out there to not get chills when Ahsoka Tano ignites her lightsabers and gets ready to take on both Inquisitors at the same time. That moment in my opinion, was the definition of how epic these shows can get. I can’t wait to see what happens with her character this season, and how she provides aid for our lead group of rebels. We’re only a few days away from the season 2 premiere, and I don’t know about you, but I already have my DVR set.
Season 2 of Star Wars Rebels will premiere on Disney XD on October 14th.
