J.J. Abrams and co. have done a pretty spectacular job at marketing Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens. They’ve also done a bang up job building on the excitement and nostalgia without spoiling any major plot-points from the movie. The closest actual plot-point, arguably, came in the form of a new poster that dropped yesterday revealing a ‘Death Star’ type weapon in the upper right corner. But that’s an article for another time.
You’ve come for the trailer; so let’s get to the magic. Because Disney really delivered:
I only wonder how many people out there, grown men and women alike, shed more than a few tears after this played. I couldn’t help myself, and yes, there were some tears. The kid in me wishing and hoping for the magic to be back in the form of a Star Wars movie, was just granted that very special of wishes. For it seems, based on this trailer and the marketing campaign thus far, Disney, Lucasfilm, JJ Abrams and Kathleen Kennedy have taken great care to give us this special return to a galaxy far, far away… I think we can all sense it.
Even when it was revealed that Disney would use ESPN and Monday Night Football to deliver the newest trailer, the term ‘corporate synergy’ was thrown around a lot. Well, I’m pretty sure Disney just re-wrote the definition with this. Disney has now hit an even wider audience for their most important branded title in their arsenal. I think it was a fantastic move.
And now, I’m sure all of you, from the hardcore fan to the newly anointed Star Wars believer will no doubt be searching online for tickets that just went on sale.
