This may be considered jumping the gun in a lot of ways, but something makes it seem like Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) has the capability of completely stealing Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens. Up until this point, the character has remained shrouded in mystery with director J.J. Abrams and co. only revealing small bits of information regarding his backstory and origins. A lot of what the fans seem to know about the character has stemmed from long hours of speculation, and with Adam Driver himself remaining as tight-lipped as ever about the character, it looks like fans won’t really know what to expect from Kylo Ren when they walk into the theatres in December.
However, he has remained at the focal point of nearly every image and promotional tool used by Lucasfilm and Disney up until this point. He was the only character on the cover of the EW issue, is one of the central characters on the Empire covers, and was one of the four Force Awakens characters that Drew Struzan made a point of including on his D23 exclusive poster for the film. Whether or not this means that Ren is going to have a much larger role in the film than fans have even given him credit for, or the press just really like that red tri-saber – it looks like he’s already set to make a big footprint in the SW universe.
In anticipation for the new Force Awakens-themed issue of Empire Magazine, the website released a new image of Kylo Ren in what looks to be a forest region, preparing for some kind of battle. In case you couldn’t have guessed it too, the image is pretty awesome. Check it out below:
The image almost looks like a painting in its own way, and I had to do a double-take before I realized this was an actual image from the movie, and not just gorgeous concept art released for the film. It’s nearly impossible to guess where this might be taking place in the actual movie, and while we’ve seen forest planets in the SW universe before, I wouldn’t put it past J.J. and Lawrence Kasdan to create an entirely new planet for this specific sequence (whatever it is) to take place.
There have been dozens of rumors circling the web regarding the possible backstory for Kylo Ren, and while a lot of fans still believe he’s the son of Han and Leia turned to the Dark Side, I’m still holding onto my personal theory that he’s either Luke’s biological son, or protege who fell under the temptation of the Sith. It just seems like from everything J.J. and co. have said about the character up to this point, that he has a strong, almost turbulent connection to the Force, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up being the son of Luke Skywalker… but that’s just my theory.
Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens is set to hit theatres on December 18th.
