(Warning: This post does contain MINOR SPOILERS regarding Lupita Nyong’o’s character in The Force Awakens.)
In terms of the characters from The Force Awakens, Lupita Nyong’o’s Maz Kanata is one of the most interesting. Not only have we yet to see any footage from her, and only really know what she looks like because of the film’s official poster, but it sounds like she could have a history in the Star Wars universe that outlasts nearly every other character from the films up until this point.
Director J.J. Abrams has previously revealed that Kanata is a thousand years old by the time we meet her in the film, making her one of the oldest characters in the Star Wars universe (that we’ve met at least). The former space pirate that now runs a watering hole in a corner of the universe has already been met with several parallels to Yoda from fans due to her age and wisdom, and it looks like those theories might not be so crazy after all too.
During yesterday’s press conference for The Force Awakens, moderator Mindy Kaling accidentally let it slip that Kanata does have a history of sorts with Yoda in the film, which prompted Abrams to respond with the following:
“I will say this, in an attempt to save my friend Lupita from this slightly awesomely geeky [subject] which is that I do believe that Maz and Yoda at one point crossed paths, but that is not something that, of course due to the events of past films, happens in this one.”
Now, the director is quick to preface the statement by saying that we won’t see Kanata and Yoda interacting in the film at all, but it is nice to know that the film might be acknowledging his presence in some way, since the possibilities of force ghosts reappearing in The Force Awakens has remained shrouded in mystery from the beginning. So while we might not see one of our favorite Jedi masters return onscreen just yet in the film, it is possible that he could pop up again some time down the line, and it looks like he might already be familiar with one of our newest characters.
Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens is set to hit theatres on December 18th.
