We’ve finally been given our second glimpse at the upcoming seventh installment of the Star Wars saga, and for fans and casual observers alike, it should prove to be both revelatory and awesome.
Before screening the trailer, Abrams thanked the fans for their passion and energy, calling it “evidence of the Force,” and then handed it off to the screen behind him for the second trailer to roll. Check it out below.
While the first trailer gave us a brief overall glimpse at what the film might feel like, the imagery introduced in the second trailer gives us a slightly better idea of what the galactic climate is like a few decades after the events of Return of the Jedi. We didn’t get to see Luke Skywalker’s face, but we did likely catch a glimpse of his robotic hand tenderly touching his old friend R2-D2. John Boyega’s character, Finn, looks like he’s in a great deal of emotional turmoil while serving as a Stormtrooper. Much like many of the other pilots of the Star Wars universe, Oscar Isaac’s Poe Dameron shows off a bit more of his playful side as we get a further glimpse of his piloting skills in the new X-wing fighter, while Daisy Ridley’s Rey extends a hand to Finn in a friendship that could define the new film series going forward.
The starkest images revolved around more familiar faces, though. While we got to see more of the apparent Sith lord Kylo Ren, we also saw a familiar and iconic helmet that will spread Darth Vader’s pall over the events of the film, even after his redemption and death. Perhaps more excitingly, though, we got to see Han Solo again, side by side with Chewbacca, and flashing a familiar and playful smile.
This is certainly an exciting look at what’s to come, and the wait has become even more painful. That’s surprising, because it didn’t seem very possible, but J.J. Abrams has demonstrated his ability multiple times in the past to make the fans want more from his films.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens will hit theaters on December 18th, 2015. For more Star Wars news to come out of this weekend’s Celebration, keep it locked on GeekNation!
