Stephen Amell Reveals the Comic Book Villain He Wants to Play

By June 13, 2016

Stephen Amell has made his impact on the geek community as The Green Arrow for several years now, and despite Arrow‘s steady decline in quality over the past two seasons, the fans’ adoration of Amell as Oliver Queen hasn’t diminished, and neither it seems, has his love of the role. Which is probably why no casting rumors for a film version of the character have even entered the conversation at this point.

During a recent interview with CinePop for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows though, Amell was asked the age old question of what other superhero he’d like to play other than Green Arrow. Instead of going with a simple answer though, Amell decided to pick a villain this time around, mostly because all of the other superheroes are taken at this point.

You might be surprised with his answer as well:

“I always get this question. I think all the superheroes are taken now. I’ll play The Riddler, okay? It’s a villain, but I like The Riddler.”

The Riddler is an interesting choice because, and I mean this with the utmost respect, he’s very different from anything that we’ve seen from Amell up to this point. With both Oliver Queen and Casey Jones, the actor has had to bring a very physical, vigilante attitude and morality to his performances. With The Riddler though, his strength isn’t in his muscles, but in his brain, and is the complete opposite of anything else that Amell has played so far.

It’d be an interesting idea, for sure though, but the likelihood of that casting actually happening is practically the definition of slim. The Riddler is a character that has been rumored for a big screen reintroduction heavily over the past few years though, dating back to the Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Leonardo DiCaprio casting rumors in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Rises, before anyone even knew what that movie was. With some small visual easter eggs referencing the character in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice though, and both Ben Affleck and Geoff Johns working on a solo Batman movie right now, I imagine we’ll see Edward Nigma pop back up on the big screen eventually. It’s all just a matter of when and how at this point.
