Steven Soderbergh Bringing ‘The Girlfriend Experience’ To Starz

By June 23, 2014

Back in 2009, Steven Soderbergh made The Girlfriend Experience, a low-budget film about a very specific kind of escort known as a GFE (Girlfriend Experience) who not only have sex with their clients but also become confidants and perform duties usually reserved for actual girlfriends or wives…if the money’s right. If you’re still confused, think of Inara Serra from “Firefly,” as she was the futuristic version of a GFE.

Starz has officially announced they’re teaming up with director Soderbergh and Philip Fleishman to create a 13-episode scripted series based on Soderbergh’s film and following the lives of said GFEs – many of which, according to Fleishman, are “extremely accomplished” and “range from musicians in major orchestras to PhD candidates in the sciences and often feel empowered by the control and economic freedom their work as GFE’s affords them.” The series itself will explore the question of  “whether they define a new genus of contemporary relationship, or have relationships always been transactionally based in one form or another?”

Soderbergh and Fleishman will serve as executive producers alongside director Lodge Kerrigan (“The Killing”, “Homeland”) and actor/producer Amy Seimetz (“The Killing,” Upstream ColorYou’re Next), who will also write and direct the series. Soderbergh certainly seems to be enjoying working on television these days, and this project marks the third premium channel he’s associated with in the past year: he directed Behind the Candelabra for HBO, is working on a series called “The Knick” for Cinemax, and now has this project in the works at Starz.

Starz’s Managing Director Carmi Zlotnik had this to say:

We’re excited to work with Steven and Philip to develop this anthology series that takes viewers into a world where intimacy has a price. We were captivated by Steven’s exploration of a story where emotional consequences arise, surprising and complicating the lives of both the clients and the professional ‘lovers.’ This series gives Starz an opportunity to work with some of the most talented independent filmmakers of today, and craft a cinematic exploration into the hearts of relationships – in line with the original film.

No word as to whether adult film star Sasha Grey (above) – whose first non-porn acting role was in Soderbergh’s film – will reprise her role or take on another GFE in some way, but it’s early days yet so when I know, you’ll know!

What do you think? Is this something you’d watch?
